Overview with Julie Crellin - Community Cancer Awareness Worker - North Cumbria

Community Cancer Awareness Workers raise awareness of the causes of cancer, its signs and symptoms as well as encouraging people to take up invitations to cancer screening programmes.

They aim to work with communities where cancer is either more prevalent or outcomes from cancer are poorer.

Cancer awareness work aims to inform communities and workplaces across North Cumbria about the importance of early diagnosis.

Diagnosing cancer before it has the chance to spread too far means that treatment is more likely to be successful.

Get Involved

If you would like to get involved, or just know more about the Community Cancer Awareness work please contact us at:

There are a number of ways you can get involved:

1. Host an Information Stand

A Community Cancer Awareness Worker can visit your community group or event with our interactive information stand. With a range of physical resources and information you can help us inform people in your local community about cancer screening programmes, signs and symptoms and self-checking – all of which can result in an earlier diagnosis and improved survival rates. We also promote healthy lifestyle choices that can reduce the risk of developing cancer.

2. Attend a Cancer Awareness Session

We can offer FREE in-person or virtual, cancer awareness sessions for your business or community group. These sessions are a great way to bring teams and groups together to learn new skills and gain knowledge.

Attendees will learn about the most common cancers, their signs and symptoms as well as screening programmes available in North Cumbria.

Addressing Health Inequalities

By focusing efforts on areas where cancer diagnosis rates are lower or outcomes are poorer, this ensures that all communities have access to vital information and resources.

This awareness work plays a vital role in reducing late-stage cancer diagnoses and improving survival rates by ensuring more people recognise symptoms early and seek medical advice promptly.
